Archer Aces Texas Hold 'Em Billiard Championship
by Sally P. Timko
Going into the finals of the Texas Hold 'Em Billiards Championship, Johnny Archer was the wild card and only held $100,000 in chips, but he didn't let that deter him. "It was just my day," Archer said philosophically afterward, clutching his $25,000 check for first place.
Archer went up against current U.S. Open champion John Schmidt, who had $165,000 in chips; George Breedlove, carrying $335,000; and Corey Deuel, the chip leader with a whopping $500,000. Breedlove was the first to say farewell, as he never won a game out of the 11 racks it took to eliminate him. After 12 games, the format changed to where the player with the shortest stack was all-in in each round.
This changed things drastically: Schmidt was now in the lead with $500,000, while Archer was all-in with $260,000. A break and run by Archer, though, gave him a huge lead, and Deuel was in jeopardy in the next rack, all-in with $80,000. He never got a chance to shoot, and then it came down to Archer versus Schmidt. The lead exchanged hands, and Schmidt was on the verge of winning everything but missed the 9 ball off the rail. Given new life, Archer gave the next rack to his opponent when he missed the 2-9 combo, but when Schmidt scratched on his following break, Archer cleared the table to take first place.
Texas Hold' Em Billiards airs on ESPN Arpil 12 from 7-10 pm.
