Archer Claims First Place at Turning Stone Classic VII Billiard Tournamentby Rick Davis, Inside POOL Magazine - Billiards NewsThe top sixteen billiards players arrived Sunday with their A game as they fought to reach the finals. Action on the one-loss side turned into death row for the top pros and crowd favorites. In the day’s first round, “Marvelous Marlon” Manalo was eliminated 9-7 by Dave Grau, while Shawn Putnam buzzed past Allen Hopkins 9-6. Putnam didn’t look back, defeating his next three opponents to find his way to the last round of the one-loss side.At the same time, Tony Crosby made his way through a couple of rounds before Keith McCready eliminated him 9-4 to face Jerry Slivka in the next round. Slivka laid waste to the one-loss side, winning seven matches after his early loss, which included eliminating defending champion Dennis Hatch 9-7. McCready put up a good fight, but Slivka took the lead and quickly built it up to take the match 9-6.
Four players on the winners’ side proved to be a yellow light for the event as the matches moved at a snail’s pace. Two interesting matches unfolded, with two top WPBA players facing top UPA and international players. Jeanette Lee faced off against Santos Sambajon Jr. and suffered a 9-7 loss. On the other end of the chart, Karen Corr faced Johnny Archer, but the recent International Challenge of Champions victor defeated Corr 9-5. Those matches were the nails in the coffins for both ladies—after they moved to the one-loss side, Slivka eliminated Lee 9-8 and Putnam ousted Corr 9-6. The top four players remaining slowly chipped away at the racks until Putnam eliminated Slivka 9-7, allowing him to move on to face Archer, who had just been defeated by Sambajon 9-5. Archer was eager for a rematch and didn’t let Putnam stand in his way for long, besting him 9-3 to face Sambajon in the finals. The final match surely took its toll on both players, ending well after midnight to conclude four long and action-packed days for some of the world’s best players. Archer took his revenge against Sambajon, defeating him 13-9 to claim the title at the Turning Stone Classic VII.
