Basavich Bests the Field at the Reno OpenBy InsidePOOL StaffIn a nailbiting two-set finals, Danny “Kid Delicious” Basavich bested former U.S. Open champion Jeremy Jones at the Reno Open. The event began on Wednesday at the Sands Regency Hotel and Casino in Reno, NV, and wrapped up on Sunday, December 12.Sunday’s matches brought the final four back, with Basavich meeting Ernesto Dominguez in the quarterfinals while Jones played Mike Vidas for the hot seat. The matches moved in tandem, with Jones and Basavich both marking 6-0 leads before things changed. Dominguez, a table mechanic out of Southern California, caught a break and logged four games in a row before trading racks with his opponent to make the score 8-5. A smart safe on the 1 in the final game saw Dominguez foul, and with ball in hand, Basavich cleared the table to advance. Jones’s match continued with the tall Texan only allowing Vidas one rack before sweeping across the finish line 9-1.
Another lopsided match took place in the semifinals between Vidas, who hails from Vancouver, B.C., and Basavich. “Kid” dominated the table almost completely, and rarely did Vidas get to look at an open shot. Finally Vidas spent a little time at the table and brought up his side of the score, but a fantastic 2-8-9 combo gave Basavich his last game, and he won the match 9-5.In the true double-elimination finals, Jones started off strong, but Basavich caught up quickly and overtook the lead. With the help of a couple of combination shots on the 9, Basavich won the first set 9-5. He came out firing in the second set as well, racing to a 5-0 lead before Jones got a game under his belt. Despite disputes over the rack, the match progressed, and Basavich reached the hill with Jones still lingering at two games. When Basavich missed a 1 ball, Jones cleared the table and then broke and ran out the next three games, but a foul by Jones in the last rack gave Basavich the match 9-6.Results:1st Danny Basavich $12,0002nd Jeremy Jones $5,5003rd Mike Vidas $3,5004th Ernesto Dominguez $2,4505th James Ladeira, Charles Bryant $1,6007th Corey Deuel, Glenn Atwell $1,1009th Jose Parica, Gabe Owen, Tyler Edey, George Michaels $90013th Edwin Montal, Ismael Paez, Jeff Abernathy, Tony Chohan $60017th Rodney Morris, Dan Wallace, Jeff Carter, Bill Houck, Brian Parks, Vince Tedesco, William Anderson, Eric Krause $400Visit InsidePOOL for the latest news from the Reno Open.
