Basavich Blasts Deuel—Sets Rematch with BryantBy Tom Martin, InsidePOOL StaffIn the semifinal match of the Glass City Open, underdog Danny Basavich scored an amazing 10-2 win over Corey Deuel, considered the favorite to win the event. A scratch on his first break by Basavich gave Deuel the first game, but in the second, after delighting the fans by showing off a huge power draw shot on the 2 ball, Deuel hung the 3. That would prove to be Deuel’s last real chance at office, as he was faced with safeties or hooked in his appearances thereafter. After a missed kick by Corey in the fifth game, Basavich got his break working, and he proceeded to put a 5-pack down to go up 9-1. An over-cut 1 ball brought Deuel to the table, but he had no choice but to play safe. Basavich played a safe of his own, and Deuel valiantly hit the ball but left the out. It looked to be over, but Basavich’s cue ball found the side pocket, earning Deuel his second point of the match. Deuel, who controlled the break and the 1 ball so beautifully in his win over Frank, could not do so today. He just missed a jump shot on the one after the break, and Basavich cleared the table for the win.Basavich will now play undefeated Charlie “Hillbilly” Bryant in the finals, a rematch of their earlier winners’ side final, in which Bryant was victorious. Deuel, who finished third, suffered both of his losses at the hands of Basavich. Basavich will now have to try to avoid the same treatment from Bryant. The finals begin here at the Clarion Westgate Hotel in Toledo, Ohio at 7 p.m.Visit InsidePOOL for the latest news on the Glass City Open.
