Billiards Tournaments Scheduled for Mohegan SunThe 2006 Mohegan Sun International Tournament of Champions and the World Cup of Trick Shots will be held November 1-2 at Mohegan Sun, Uncasville, CT. The field of billiard players in both events will include champions from around the globe.
The Ninth Annual International Tournament of Champions will be one of the most widely viewed billiards programs on ESPN. Once each year four international champions are brought together in a sudden-death shootout with winner-take-all of $25,000. The purse is the highest single payday in Women’s events, and the winner claims one of the most coveted titles in pool – Champion of Champions! The 2006 field includes top stars in the sport. Ga Young Kim, winner of the 2005 International Tournament of Champions is also the reigning World Champion. Allison Fisher, Ten Time Player of the Year, is currently World Ranked #1. Karen Corr, winner of three 2006 WPBA Classic Tour events, is currently World Ranked #2. Kelly Fisher, the 2006 and 2005 WPBA San Diego Classic Champion also holds six World Snooker Championship titles. The International Tournament of Champions is widely considered the most difficult tournament to win in professional billiards. The four players are so evenly matched that any one player could beat the other three on a given day. The matches are two sets, race to five games each set, with a 1-game sudden death tie-breaker in the event of tied sets. The caliber of competition is so intense that a single mistake invariably eliminates a player from any chance at the winner-take-all purse of $25,000.The World Cup of Trick Shots will present Team America vs. Team Europe, with eight international stars contending for a purse of $50,000. Mike Massey, the 2006 World Artistic Pool Champion, will captain Team America. Stefano Pelinga, the 2005 Trick Shot Magic Champion, will captain Team Europe. Team America also includes champions Andy Segal, Bruce Barthelette and Tom Rossman. Team Europe includes champions Nick Nikolaidis, Luke Szywala and Bogdan Wolkowski. The format for World Cup consists of two skill shots and eight artistic show shots by both teams in a match. Team members execute a challenge shot of their choice, and their opponents are required to duplicate the shot or lose a point. In the Semifinals, with two members from each team, the players alternate shots in four man head-to-head matches, performing intricate trick shots meant to stymie their opponents. A sudden death tiebreaker to decide a match will require an eight rail bank shot onto the face of a $100 bill. The Championship Finals match will pit all eight members of Team America and Team Europe in the wildest shootout of the year.Mohegan Sun, the host site, will make both events ADMISSION FREE to pool fans. On Wednesday, November 1, the three matches for the INTERNATIONAL TOURNAMENT OF CHAMPIONS will begin at 5PM. On Thursday, November 2, the three matches for WORLD CUP OF TRICK SHOTS will begin at 4pm.
