Day One Finished, 60 Advance in Billiards TournamentTeam USA finished the day on a high note, with almost all of the US players winning their final matches. Mike Davis, Shane Van Boening, Charlie Bryant, Steve Moore, Danny Harriman, Gabe Owen, Larry Nevel, Tony Robles, Tommy Kennedy, and John Schmidt all won their fourth-round matches and will advance. Nevel, Owen, and Schmidt were undefeated today.Robles, who bested Grady Mathews 8-6, reported, “My matches went rather well—I’m very pleased. I know I can play a lot better, but because of the first-day jitters, I didn’t play as well as I would have or expected to, but I’m looking forward to the day off tomorrow and starting fresh on Tuesday.”Discuss the IPT World Open 8-Ball ChampionshipVisit the IPT World Open 8-Ball Championship Image Gallery “The breaks are not bad,” he added. “I think I’m making more balls than I’m not. The real problem is I am missing too many easy shots. That was okay today, but as things go on and on, they get tougher and tougher and you can’t do that any longer. The tables are playing a little tricky, but overall I like the way they are playing. Just that sometimes when you come off the cushon you expect a certain angle … what people don’t understand is that the cloth has only been played on for seven or eight days—it usually about a month to break in the cloth.”
Ralf Souquet and Danny Harriman matched up in the fifth round, with Souquet coming away the 8-5 victor. “It wasn’t the nicest match,” Souquet recalled. “I didn’t make too many balls on the break, but I pulled it out to win eight-five. I was already through to the second round, but I wanted to be sure to win that as well. To win every match is very important for the rankings later on. For the first day it was okay—I’m four and oh, I’m not one-hundred-percent happy, there are some position plays that I am not really into the precise plan yet … I’m still working on the precision parts. Like I said, for the first day it was okay. I’m quite happy with the performance and I am looking forward to Day Three, Round Two.” Both Souquet and Harriman advance to Tuesday.Harriman cited break problems in the match. “I played all right. I play good in spots, but my break was not working well. I’m not familiar with the cloth yet. I played with it when I was young, and we played on this wool cloth, but its been twenty years since I played on it ... it slides, the shots are slip-sliding away where the Simonis cloth has some bite to it. I caught some bad rolls earlier—overall, I am not upset. My main goal was to make the cut.”He was quick to add, “My break is not clicking—they pound those balls in the holes so it’s tricky to break on with that Sardo Rack. This is beautiful, I take my hat off to Mike Sigel and Kevin Trudeau—this is the niecest venue I have ever been a part of. I’m thankful we have some money in pool. I'm looking forward to 2007 and get my card to compete more.”In the Filipino corner, Rodolfo Luat demolished Australia’s Quinten Hann 8-2, Francisco Bustamante bested Roman Hybler of Germany, Antonio Lining won 8-5 over James Walden, Ronato Alcano dusted Sarah Ellerby 8-1, Efren Reyes annihilated Lee Heuwagen 8-0, Alex Pagulayan squeaked by Kevin Becker 8-7, Dennis Orcollo bested Nick Varner 8-5, Warren Kiamco destroyed Jim Raney 8-1, and Marlon Manalo defeated Charlie Williams 8-3.Other than Ellerby’s loss to Alcano, Mary Kenniston lost to David Alcaide by the same 8-1 score, while Ewa Laurance had the same results against Jose Parica. However, Kelly Fisher did score an 8-1 victory over Bernard Friend. Jackie Broadhurst put three games under her belt before Mike Massey won their match, and Linda Carter got two against David Reljic. Karen Corr bested Aaron Franken 8-6 for her third win of the day.Tip controversy erupted when snooker player Jimmy White of the UK was found to be using a non-leather-tipped cue stick in his match against Hung Ming Chu. Tournament director Deno Andrews announced, “Jimmy White was caught using a phenalic tip, which is prohibited on the IPT. Last night at the players’ meeting it was stated you are disqualified from the entire tournament if caught using the tip; however, his flight was late, he was traveling, and could not make the players meeting, so without him knowing, we decided instead to have him forfeit that match zero-eight and allow him to continue playing.”Sixty of today’s one hundred players will advance to Tuesday, while tomorrow, the other one hundred play down to sixty as well. On Tuesday, 120 will convene for the second day of play for all involved. Round 1 GROUP 1T. HohmannS. MooreL. JonesW. KiamcoJ. RaneyGROUP 2M. ManaloC. WilliamsS. TownsendT. KennedyR.
