Edwin Garcia wins the Ponce Open

Edwin Garcia wins the Ponce OpenEdwin Garcia, has once again displayed why he is a most respected and feared player in Puerto Rico. Edwin, won the Ponce Open undeafeated and in extraordinary fashion. He quietly disposed of excellent players like Luis Lasalle, Silverio Salas, Edwin Toro, and Luis Cancel twice with relative ease. His scores were 11-7, 11-5, 11-2, 11-8, 11-4, and 11-3. His most troubled match was with Edwin Toro, whom he defeated 11-8, but Garcia had already mounted such a lead that it was inevitable that he would win. Edwin Toro ran 4 racks on Garcia before he ran out of gas with 8 wins.Luis Cancel, the runner-up to the Championship had an excellent tournament. Cancel also defeated his opponents with relative ease. Cancel won his first match with score of 11-5 against Edwin Rivera. Then he dispatched Nelson L. Rivera with another 11-5 score. He met 4-time Puerto Rico National Champion Alan Rolon, and dispatched him 11-4, on the winnes side, before being defeated by Edwin Garcia on their first match 11-4.
Cancel had to wait for the winner between Alan Rolon and Edwin Toro. Alan and Edwin were vying for 4th place in the tournament. Alan won with score of 9-5 to go for 3rd place against Luis Cancel. Cancel had defeated Alan earlier with score of 11-4, and would now face him again to go for the title. Cancel lead the way during the match and had Alan 7-4. Everyone thought Cancel would easily win; however, Alan found a second wind and all of a sudden the match was tied at 8. Alan had a chance to run the last table but got out of line with the 6 ball, missed it and gave Cancel the chance he needed to get back at the table and secure another win against Rolon on the same day. This time the score was 9-8.Cancel then found himself in another rematch with Edwin Garcia for the title but Garcia had been playing with such ease and accuracy that Cancel practicallywatched as Garcia mounted a huge lead without giving much opportunity for Cancel to reach the table.
