Engert Guns Down Busta in BilliardsThere were more upsets at the 2006 Philippines World Pool Championship on day one of the single elimination knock-out stages as Filipino idol Francisco Bustamante crashed out of the tournament at the hands of Germany's Thomas Engert (pictured right). The score in the last 64 match was 10-7 and it was a superb showing from the European No.2 who looks a good bet to make further progress in the Championship. The match did not particularly flow in the opening stages as the German built up a solid 4-1 lead.Discuss the 2006 Philippines World Pool ChampionshipWith a good crowd willing him on, Bustamante dug in to level it at 4-all and he then took the ninth game to take the lead for the first time.
But, Engert, 41, from Dueren, just west of Cologne, then upped the ante as he reeled off the next three to put some distance between himself and ‘Django’.Bustamante pegged it back to 7-6 but another burst from Engert saw him reach the hill at 9-6. The Filipino offered token resistance but the former World Pool Masters Champion took the 17th game for a magnificent win.“I’m just fighting for me out there," said Engert "I’ve beaten him twice before in the World Pool Championship, in Cardiff once and last year in Kaohsiung but that was in the group stages so it wasn’t such a big thing as here.“When you are on the hill and leading 9-6 you know you have got two more chances because it’s alternate break but I had to take the chance and I did so this was a good day for me,” he added.Another top German had no such joy as 2003 World Champion Thorsten Hohmann bit the dust at the hands of the sole remaining Canadian Tyler Edey.Edey came through in a hill-hill battle with Raj Hundal to make the single elimination and it was another hill-hill epic as the 26 year-old held his nerve for a shock victory.Another previous champion is also on his way home as Earl Strickland was trounced by Taiwan's Liu Cheng-chuan 10-2. Strickland, whose behaviour this week has been questionable to say the least, put on a poor display as he offered no resistance at all.In all fairness, Liu stuck to the job in hand and was good value for the win, but Strickland appears to be a shadow of his former self.
