EnjoyPool.com 9-Ball Championship Beginsby InsidePOOL StaffLas Vegas is heating up, with an influx of some of the top 120 male and female 9-ball players converging upon the Riviera Hotel & Casino. On top of the BCA Pool League players, the casino is practically overrun with hopeful players from all over the world.The first round of the EnjoyPool.com 9-Ball Championship just finished on Monday afternoon. Defending champion Thorsten “The Hitman” Hohmann won his first match and will go on to meet Ernesto Dominguez in the next round. Last year’s runner-up, Johnny “The Scorpion” Archer, was matched up with Kim Davenport, who recently returned to the pro scene after an eye injury a couple of years ago. Archer bested Davenport 11-4 and will play John “Mr. 400” Schmidt, who won hill-hill against Ohio’s Chris Szuter in the first round, next.Visit the Enjoypool.com image gallery
Hall of Fame member Nick Varner was sent to the one-loss side after his 11-8 first-round loss to Jose “Amang” Parica, while SoCal’s Dave Hemmah was dealt a 11-5 loss by Charlie “The Korean Dragon” Williams. Ralf Souquet bested recent IPT addition George Breedlove 11-9, and Efren Reyes squeaked by in his match against the legendary “Machine Gun” Lou Butera 11-9. Another recent IPT addition, Dennis Orcollo, rolled over Italy’s hope, Fabio Petroni, 11-5.In the women’s division, defending champion Allison Fisher won her first match and will meet Melissa Little in the second round. Other favorites, such as Jeanette Lee, Julie Kelly, and recent college grad Gerda Hofstatter are still in the winners’ bracket. Ga-Young Kim, though, lost her first match to Jasmine Ouschan double-hill and will play Stacy Hurst in the one-loss side.
