Filipinos and Ladies Turn in a Few Losses at IPT Billiards TournamentBilliard players Oliver Ortmann met Glenn Atwell in his first round this morning and registered an 8-3 win with four break and run-outs, while in the same group, Steve Moore defeated reigning World All-Around champion Jason Miller by the same score. Ortmann and Moore will meet in the next round. In the other match in that group, Philip Harrison bested Chris Bartram 8-2.After his watch, Ortmann commented, “Actually I feel pretty good. It’s very important to win the first match … and I did, I won eight-three. I had a couple of problems because the table was not at the right level.Discuss the IPT World Open 8-Ball ChampionshipVisit the IPT World Open 8-Ball Championship Image Gallery“The break is the most important thing,” he continued. “My break didn’t work in Vegas, so I was working on it a lot, but now it works pretty good. I changed the shaft and everything.”Regarding his upcoming match with fellow countryman Thorsten Hohmann’s eliminator Moore, Ortmann replied, “I’ve never played him before, so I don’t want to think about him. I want to concentrate on my own game. If my break works well and I can find my stroke, then I don’t see a reason to think about my opponent.”
American Cliff Joyner met with Chile’s Alejandro Carvajal and won with a decisive 8-2 score, including two break and run-outs. He explained his daily strategy afterward. “Well, as every day goes when I play my first match, the tournament matches, they are always huge for me. Always a struggle regardless of who I play, and once I get past the first, it’s normally pretty good after that. I feel great, especially the way I am breaking the balls, and I’m looking forward to the next match.”Also playing for the US, Tony “T-Rex” Chohan won 8-5 over Gerry Watson, and Corey Deuel almost whitewashed Oezer Bulunmaz 8-1. John “Mr. 400” Schmidt had a close match against Johnathan “Lil Jon” Macias but won 8-6.Of the six ladies remaining, only Allison Fisher turned in a win in the first round, besting Chris Melling of the UK in a double-hill match. Sarah Ellerby was handed a donut by Rodney Morris, Karen Corr lost 8-3 to Sal Butera, Loree Jon Jones was routed 8-1 by Michael Hill, and Kelly Fisher lost 8-2 to Robert McKenna. Jasmin Ouschan has an unenviable group consisting of Alex Pagulayan, Vince Facquet, Imran Majid, Frankie Hernandez, and Tony Robles. She played Robles in the first round and went hill-hill but came up empty on her last break, and Robles dished up for the win.The Filipinos ended up with mixed reviews in the latter half of the first round: Edwin Montal won 8-5 over Charlie Williams, Santos Sambajon Jr. bested David Matlock 8-3, and Francisco Bustamante dealt an 8-2 loss to Tang Hoa. But Jose Parica suffered an 8-4 loss to Finnish Mika Immonen, Marlon Manalo lost a hill-hill match to Hui-Kai Hsia, and Roland Acosta defeated Ronato Alcano 8-5.A referee dished out a penalty for slow play to Paul Potier’s opponent Yannick Beaufils of France in the first round, and Potier went on to win the match 8-4. “I felt I played reasonably well—one time I missed a ball because I had to goto the washroom, and my opponent just got a warning for slow play, and instead of thinking of me, I was thinking of him. I know that sounds corny, but I always have that … before I come to a tournament I’m thinking of everybody else, because I’m teaching and doing everything.“When he gave the warning I felt bad, even though I knew it was right, because at four-one there was no question he was at the table seventy-five percent of the time, and I was up. But he didn’t understand the fact that he got a warning, and he really should have … I felt bad and didn’t want to goto the washroom. But after I missed I said enough is enough—I gotta win this match! So when he scratched on the break I went quickly, then I felt good … no more pressure. When you have to go to the washroom, that pressure in your system makes it hard to think right.”Darryl Peach, the last person to qualify for the IPT during their winter qualification events, met legendary player Billy Incardona in the first round, coming away the 8-5 winner. “I did very well,” said the Brit afterward. “There was a little confusion on the scoring in the middle of the match—I was seven-two up, and he thought it was six-two. One thing that I’m one-hundred percent certain is I’m not cheating. He didn’t say I was—he just thought there was some confusion, and it sort of affected me a little, and it ended up coming back to seven-five, then I crawled over the line basically eight-five. At the end of the day, a win is a win.”Johnny Archer and Nick Varner had an epic match, where Archer was holding a 7-4 lead but let it go only to win double-hill. “Well, I was a little nervous,” drawled Archer. “You will always be a little nervous ... it was hard playing Nick—he was always one of my idols. He is one of my favorite guys—actually, my favorite guy, so it’s hard playing against him because you gotta have that killer instinct and play as hard as you can to try to win.”Round 2 GROUP 41GROUP 42GROUP 43GROUP 44GROUP 45GROUP 46GROUP 47GROUP 48GROUP 49GROUP 50GROUP 51GROUP 52GROUP 53GROUP 54GROUP 55GROUP 56GROUP 57GROUP 58GROUP 59GROUP 60K.
