First Round at World Open Billiards Tournament Finishes UpPast U.S. Open champion Jeremy “Double J” Jones finished up his billiard match against Jose Parica the 8-4 victor and had some words of wisdom to impart. “I played pretty good … made a couple of mistakes, but I was calm and happy with the way I played. I don’t think about the finish line too much - you get thinking about that and funny things happen. I was up a couple of games and was thinking if I win this game it’s almost a lock, but then I told myself don’t think about stuff like that and play one game at a time.”Discuss the IPT World Open 8-Ball ChampionshipVisit the IPT World Open 8-Ball Championship Image GalleryFlorida’s Tommy Kennedy, another past Open champ, made quick work of Scotty Townsend in their first-round match, breaking and running four racks and pocketing the 8 ball on the break in another to win 8-2. Notorious slow player Charlie Williams and Rafael Gonzalez were each penalized a game in their match, which Williams went on to win 8-3. Danny Harriman, who qualified for the World Open at Pro Tyme Billiards in Orland Park, IL, at one of the toughest qualification events, won his first round against Ryan Keller with an 8-0 whitewashing.
Jon “Straight As An Arrow” Kucharo, who has been noticeably absent from the pool scene until now, won a decisive 8-2 victory over Charlie Bryant, and Danny “Kid Delicious” Basavich won his first match against famed table mechanic Ernesto Dominguez 8-5. Thirteen-year-old Austin Murphy suffered a first-round loss to Michael Schmidt, who is filling in for snooker star Ronnie O’Sullivan, who was unable to fly to Reno because of a painful ear infection.Only three matches went the full fifteen games in the first round. Cue maker and former world champion Bobby Hunter squeaked by against Aaron Franken, Tuan Kiat Goh came out ahead of room owner Jimmy Wetch, and Canada’s Paul Potier bested Ouahbi Amine.Ten ladies play today, while the other five will play in Monday’s matches. In the first round, only two ladies won. Kelly Fisher defeated Dimitri Jungo 8-5, and Sarah Ellerby bested fellow female Mary Kenniston 8-6. Gerda “G-Force” Hofstatter came off a difficult match against Oezer Bulunmaz, who qualified at the Rome event with Steve Moore. “I lost eight to six. I was down three to one, and he made a silly mistake and I was able to capitalize on that one and run two more. I got ahead six-four and had a chance to go seven-four, but I messed up on my last stripe. Overall I guess I could have played better. He played well … half the people lost their first game, so I just have to look forward to the next one.”She added, “The venue is fantastic. I like the hotel better at the last stop, but I like the venue here because things are spread out and there is more room between tables.”Round 1 GROUP 1T. HohmannS. MooreL. JonesW. KiamcoJ.
