Foldes is First Billiards Player ThroughHungary's Vilmos Foldes became the first billiard player to make it through to the round of 32 as he overcame Mexican veteran Ernesto Dominguez by 10-7 on Wednesday afternoon at the PICC in Manila as the 2006 Philippines World Pool Championship knock-out stages.Foldes, 21, who won the WPA World Junior Championship in 2003, is a fast-improving player on the world scene and showed his potential by making the last 16 in Kaohsiung last year. The California-based Dominguez, 51, has appeared in every WPC since 1999 excepting last year, and compiled a fine three wins from three record in the group stages.Discuss the 2006 Philippines World Pool ChampionshipBoth players made mistakes in the opening games as Dominguez opened up a 4-2 lead in the alternate break formatted match.
Foldes hung in there and reeled off six consecutive racks to all but extinguish the Mexican’s hopes. Dominguez won the 16th to reduce the arrears but that was to be his final contribution to the match.“I felt comfortable out there, and not nervous at all. I knew before the game I was going to win, he said afterwards.“I concentrated on the balls and waited for him to make mistakes. Although I was behind 6-4 I always knew I was in it and he made a mistake in the 11th rack and that gave me a chance. I don’t worry about the format – alternate break or winner break – as long as I win. I’m hoping to do the same as in 2005, last 16 or better.”Foldes will face Vietnam's Luong Chi-dung in the next round. The sharp-shooting Luong disposed of Nien Rong-chih by a similar 10-7 scoreline.Elsewhere, China's Li He-wen who came to the event as an unknown, made his way through as he took care of surprise Chilean Alejandro Carvajal 10-5. Li is shaping up to one of the surprise packages of the tournament.
