Friday Night at the Reno OpenBy InsidePOOL StaffFriday night’s matches at the Reno Open left only four in the winners’ bracket, to be narrowed to two on Saturday evening. The event, which is in its nineteenth year, is being held at the Sands Regency Hotel and Casino in Reno, NV, and will conclude on Sunday, December 12.Two best friends and U.S. Open champs faced off on Friday as Jeremy “Double J” Jones met Gabe Owen in the winners’ bracket. Jones took a commanding 4-1 lead in the race to 9, but Owen was able to turn the match around and knot the score at 4. From there, Jones went up to 7-4, but again Owen determinedly fought back to make it a hill-hill nailbiter. Owen came up dry on the break, and Jones opted to push out, pocketing the 4 and leaving a tough bank on the 1. Owen tried to play safe but scratched, and Jones ran the rack out for his 9-8 win.
Corey Deuel and Danny “Kid Delicious” Basavich, who is the subject of a lengthy feature story in Sports Illustrated that is due out this month, also battled it out to the hill. Basavich overcame a 7-3 deficit with some excellent play but was unable to convert after tying the match at 8-all.Canadian Tyler Edey dealt Jose Parica his first loss 9-4 in the winners’ bracket, and Charlie “Hillbilly” Bryant, recent winner of the Glass City Open, won his match over Glenn Atwell 9-5. In the one-loss side, Rodney Morris had a 9-0 wipeout over Richard Burns, Canadian-Filipino Edwin Montal ousted former Reno Open champ Mike Davis 9-4, Ismael “Morro” Paez defeated Arizona player Jimmy Mendoza 9-6, and Jeff Abernathy won against Gerardo Jamito 9-7.In the last round on Friday, the winners' bracket was narrowed to four players. Bryant defeated James Laderia 9-6, Mike Vidas bested Corey Deuel 9-7, Ernesto Dominguez won over Tyler Edey 9-6, and Jeremy Jones defeated George Michaels 9-6.Saturday’s matches will narrow the field to the final four, who will return on Sunday at 11 a.m. Visit InsidePOOL for the latest news on the Reno Open.
