Hohmann Ousted from Billiards IPT World Open 8-Ball ChampionshipBilliard player Thorsten Hohmann found himself once again on the receiving end of misfortune tonight when he came up against a very determined Steve Moore. With Warren Kiamco in their group holding three wins, Jim Raney not a threat, and Loree Jon Jones, Moore, and Hohmann fighting over the other two spots, Moore wasn’t about to let the North American Open champion stand in his way of advancement.Discuss the IPT World Open 8-Ball ChampionshipVisit the IPT World Open 8-Ball Championship Image GalleryWith Hohmann having nothing but troubles with his break and Moore’s working as smooth as silk, it wasn’t long before Moore was zooming ahead in the match. Keeping a comfortable three-game distance between them, Moore wove in and out of the racks as Hohmann sat stiffly in his chair. Moore had an empty break, allowing the former world champion to clear the table and bring the score to 4-2 Moore, but then Hohmann came up dry himself, and Moore ran out.
Hohman put the next game under his belt when Moore scratched on his first ball and handed the cue ball over. But then he again came up dry, and Moore dished up and then broke and ran the next to reach the hill 7-3. A considerable crowd had gathered at this point, as well as the television camera. Coming down to the 8 ball, Moore got out of line and was forced to go for a dicey crossbank but missed, and Hohmann notched that rack. Predictably, though, he came up empty on the break. The layout wasn’t the prettiest, and each player had one miss before Moore cleared for his 8-4 victory. “I felt pretty comfortable. I knew if I beat him, he would be out of the tournament and that was a little more to weight on me than I thought, then a crowd gathered and that made it a little more intense,” Moore recounted. “I kept my composure, though. He didn’t make balls on the break and that helped me out a lot. I made some mistakes, but his breaks let me win the match. He made some mistakes but the breaks were his downfall … I don’t think he made one but once. I was breaking well … tough luck, that’s all I can say.”Disappointed but rational, Hohmann explained what happened. “The break bad again. I could not make a ball on the break, I missed a few shots again. He played great. I deserved to lose, he deserved to win. There are good and bad tournaments. I won the last one and got knocked out in the first round here—of course I’m disappointed, though.” Moore will advance to Tuesday’s play, as will Warren Kiamco and Loree Jon Jones from Group 1.Round 1 GROUP 1T.
