Horsfall Defeats SouquetBy InsidePOOL StaffThe first champion has fallen in the 13th Annual International Challenge of Champions. Ralf Souquet has taken an early exit after his match with Canadian champion John Horsfall. Horsfall took the first two games after two bungled safeties on the 2 ball by Souquet. After a foul was called on Horsfall in the next rack because his sweater touched an object ball, Souquet got on the board. However, Souquet made two more errors, allowing the score to reach 4-1 in Horsfall's favor.
The format is alternating break, a race to seven, and matches must be won by a two-game margin. Until the last two racks, no one managed to break and run out. When the score reached 6-4 in Horsfall's favor, Souquet, who was breaking, was extra careful, breaking and running out. Unfortunately for the 2002 U.S. Open champ, Horsfall showed an equal amount of determination and broke and ran to win the match 7-5.
