Jones Defeats Hohmann in Fourth Round of IPT World Open 8-Ball ChampionshipIn the biggest upset of the billiards tournament so far, Hall of Fame member Loree Jon Jones met with North American Open champion Thorsten Hohmann and defeated him 8-4. “Round robins are a funny format, and it was do or die,” reported an elated Jones shortly afterward. “I lost my first two and won my third, so the only way I would have even a tiny shot to get in was to beat Thorsten, who won the [last] tournament. So I am like, just bear down … it’s eight-ball, and if I break and run out that’s no more than he can do. And I did it five times! I found a little niche, adjusted the way I do it, learned how to move the cue ball and some other tricks.”
A dispirited Hohmann was found in the players’ green room directly after the match. “Well, she didn't beat me, she killed me. She played great. The table was breaking real easy, we had one-hundred percent, every break balls went in. She took advantage of it and ran five racks. She totally deserved to beat me. It looks very tough for me, I don’t know if I can make it. I need to win eight-one or eight-two to have a chance … what can I do?”Elsewhere in the same group, Warren Kiamco bested Steve Moore 8-5, which means that the fifth round will determine who advances. Kiamco will obviously advance with three wins, Jones and Moore have two each, and Hohmann and Raney have one. Moore and Hohmann play each other in the last round.
