Kiamco Sweeps the U.S. Bar Table Championshipsby Rick Davis
With the top 12 assembled at the U.S. Bar Table 8-Ball Championships, Warren Kiamco of the Philippines had his engine roaring on the winners’ side with his sights set on adding the 8-ball division to his 9-ball title taken a couple days earlier.
Kiamco defeated fellow countryman Antonio Gabica to reach the hot seat match and face Kim Davenport, who was playing strong after sending Ike Runnels west. Kiamco kept the pressure on as he drilled Davenport 5-1 to rest comfortably in the hot seat.
On the one-loss side everyone was eager to take the title from Kiamco in the finals, but to get there, a gauntlet of matches stood in the way. Shane Van Boening was looking good after eliminating Jeff Whitehead and Tyler Edey and then dominating Runnels, defeating him 5-2 to reach the quarterfinals. Nearby, Walter Glass sent Donald Wirtaman and Josh Smith to the door, although Gabica was ready to fight, and after a double-hill match Gabica advanced past Glass to meet Boening.
The quarterfinal match against Van Boening offered a thrilling double-hill finish that was taken by Gabica, then in the semifinals Gabica once again dominated, this time pounding Davenport 5-1. Now Gabica was in the finals, but Kiamco could see the prize in sight and before long took the title 5-3.
After sweeping the 9-ball event earlier in the week, Kiamco repeated his performance in the 8-ball division. The 9-ball title earned him $6,000, while the 8-ball title was worth another $7,000. On top of that, he received bonus money for taking both titles in the sum of $5,000, making his total payout for the six days of events $18,000.
