Korea Pro Tour Championships Stage 2 Begins Korea and Japan Serve Notice with Big Wins at Korea Pro Tour Championships
The 2nd Annual Brunswick KPT Pro Championships main event began with some very big surprises in the opening rounds. Day 1 the day before had 9 Koreans qualify into the stage 2 rounds. A total of 36 foreign players from Europe, Japan, USA, Hong Kong, Singapore, and Philippines filled the invited spots for the men and women divisions.
In the mens division, three World Champions were all beat in the opening rounds to unknown players. Thorsten Hohmann, Kunihilo Takahashi, and reigning World 9 Ball Champion Ronnie Alcano all suffered defeats at the hands of Japan's underdogs. Other upsets included Charlie Williams loss to Korea's unranked Jae Young Jung and JBC Japan's #1 Hiroshi Takenaka's loss to Korea's #23 ranked Hee Chul Kim. Mika Immonen was the lone World Champion that cruised through the opening rounds and secured himself in the last 16.
"It's a little freaky how so many good players got beat the first rounds. But I've been practicing more and training in the gym. In my opinion I've been playing bad these past 12 months and now I've re-committed myself to the game. I'm very motivated." said Mika Immonen when asked on the first round outcomes.
On the womens side, imagine if you would be startled and sharked by a dozen photographers running around the table shooting your every movement and hearing 20 camera's clicking away in middle of your stroke. That's what a tournament day is like for #1 seed Yuram Cha. But the steely eyed and focused Cha was on her A game as she crushed Japan's Yukari Matsufusa the first round 6-1 then defeated JPBA Japan's #3 Kyoko Sone. Yuram's older sister Boram defeated Japan's Chirihiro Kawahara 6-5 and then upsetted #2 and 5x Player of the Year Sung Hyun Jung before losing to Japan's Miyuki Sakai 6-4.
Day 3 of the KPT Championships continues tomorrow and will narrow down to the last 4 players in both men and womens divisions for the televised rounds on Day 4.
