Manalo Leads the Pack With 3 WinsThe third round has just ended, with Marlon Manalo leading the group going into the fourth round with three wins so far, besting Efren Reyes 8-7, Evgeny Stalev 8-0, and now Dennis Orcollo 8-7.Orcollo won the lag in their match and broke and ran out, but from there, no one managed to string anything together until late in the match. Trading racks after every game, the score seesawed to 5-all, at which point Manalo broke and ran two racks in a row to reach the hill. Orcollo tried valiantly but only got one more before Manalo took the match 8-6.IPT discussion forumDay 7 image galleryMatch schedule for July 29, 2006“My feelings are still the same,” Manalo reported after the fourth round, “because winning three matches is not getting into the finals. I still need one more win.” Thorsten Hohmann made quick work of Efren Reyes in the third round. Reyes appears tired, and many times during the match his cue ball was flirting with the pockets. Hohmann was up 5-1 before long but missed the 5 ball in the following rack, giving that rack to Reyes, who then broke and ran the following to make it 5-3. A dry break gave Hohmann the advantage again, and he won the next three racks in a row to win 8-3.
Hohmann commented on the format, which will very likely have a direct effect on who winds up in the winner’s circle. “I think the players have to become more professional athletes with the format, which I like, and now with the money, they have the opportunity, if they’re smart, to get a coach, get a personal trainer, and work on their game. That’s what I want to do. I still love the game, the money’s great … but it also gives me also more opportunities to focus even more on the sport and get professional help and maybe become a better player.”Ralf Souquet foundered in his third match against Stalev. Down 6-1 to the Russian, Souquet capitalized on a poor safety attempt and ran out, but an empty break turned the table over again. Souquet was given one more chance when Stalev scratched on his next break, but Souquet left himself no good shot on the 8. An excellent safety by Stalev gave him ball in hand when Souquet fouled, and Stalev cleared the remainder of the balls from the table to win 8-2.While Manalo has three wins out of three, Hohmann and Orcollo have two, Souquet and Stalev have one. Reyes has not won a match today. Round 6 Group 82E. ReyesR. SouquetT. HohmannE. StalevD. OrcolloM.
