More surprises at the Ponce OpenDay two of the Open is over and we are at the start of a new day; however, we cannot continue without providing our readers with some of yesterday's surprises that cannot go unnoticed.Mike Davis who earned his entry fees and travel expenses was eliminated in his third round at the table. On Friday he was bested by Eric Gonzalez, a strong player and past national champion in Puerto Rico. Yesterday, Mike was to meet with Nicolas Burgos on his second match, but Burgos did not show up and Mike won the match by forfeit. He was to then meet with Edgardo Irizarry, another player who has made a name for himself these past few months in the Puerto Rico tour. Match time came, and Mike practically sat as a spectator while Edgardo took the lead 3-0 before Mike put the score at 4-1. The score got to 7-2 in favor of Edgardo before Mike won his 3rd game of the match. After that, Edgardo won the next 2 games to knock-out Mike Davis from the Ponce Open with score of 9-3.
After yesterday's match with Mike Davis, it seemed that Eric Gonzalez could cruise by the tournament into the finals. However, in his next match with Edwin Toro, Eric trailed until Edwin won the match with score of 11-9. Eric then passed to the one-loss side and was defeated by Javier de Jesus 9-6. Eric is now out of the Open.On the other hand, Edgardo Irizarry who played brilliantly against Mike Davis did not survive his next match. Edgardo was defeated by Nelson L. Rivera with score of 9-5, and was also knock-out of the tournament.Eight players remain for the last day of the Ponce Open. In the winners bracket Edwin Garcia will meet Edwin Toro in the first match of the day, while Alan Rolon will meet Luis Cancel, who have made a strong and quiet showing at the Ponce Open.In the one-loss side we have Javier de Jesus versus Wilbert Ortiz, and Nelson L. Rivera versus Luis Lasalle in the mid-afternoon matches. The owners of the venue, Marisela Sanchez and Miguel Batista have indicated that this event will be held again next year (June 2007) and we hope that Mike Davis returns to Puerto Rico for another chance at the title and against our players. We appreciate the time by Mike and his girlfriend with us this year, and we hope they do have a remaining pleasant trip in our beautiful Island of Puerto Rico.
