Pagulayan Notches Win in TorontoBy Bill RosenbergerCurrent WPA World Champion Alex Pagulayan, a Toronto resident, was taking time to relax by playing in the 9-Ball Showdown Tour at Shooters in Toronto, ontario. While he was enjoying the weekend, his opponents were the ones getting stressed out while trying fruitlessly to knock out the champion. The event, held on December 11-12, 2004, filled the bracket with 64 talented players who competed on 14 Gold Crown tables for a top prize of $2,100. Of the 12 players left for Sunday's final rounds, Pagulayan was the clear favorite, but two other top area players, Mario Morra and Eric Hildebrand, at least made it interesting. Morra faced Pagulayan to see who would reach the hot seat match. The two kept it close the whole way through, but Pagulayan squeaked out the 9-7 win. Pagulayan then matched up against Hildebrand for the hot seat, but his momentum couldn't be stopped, and he took the match 9-3. In the west side, Morra ousted Paul Thornley to earn a bout with Hildebrand to see who would advance to the finals. Morra showed that he just wanted it more, winning the match 7-3. The final match seemed like more of a practice run for Pagulayan, easily winning the match and the tournament 11-4.Results:1st Alex Pagulayan $2,1002nd Mario Morra $1,1003rd Eric Hildebrand $7004th Paul Thornley $5005th Andrew Attard, Sam Siolas $3257th John Jorgenson, Jeff White $150 Visit InsidePOOL for the latest news in the sport of billiards and pool.
