Perfect Day for PeayRack & Cue Billiards / Campbellsville, KY
by Tom Fryer
Billy Peay wound up the happiest of a strong field of 27 players welcomed to David Whitlock’s Rack & Cue Billiards in Campbellsville, KY, March 3. The attraction was David’s $1,000 guaranteed prize fund, race-to-7, double-elimination 9-ball tourney. This event is held on the first Saturday of every month until summer.
The pre-tournament favorites held form in the early rounds, although Bruce Luttrell played perfectly to lead Shannon Murphy 6-1. Luttrell only got one more (unsuccessful) opportunity as Murphy won the last six racks. In another key winners’ side match, Peay had his break working as he ambushed Larry Price 7-1. "Dark Horse" Kenny Tran earned his way to the hot seat match by toppling Murphy but was sent to the one-loss side by Peay.
Tran’s strong run ended in third place as he went down swinging to Price 7-4. This set up the true double-elimination finals rematch for the $500 first-place prize. It was quite a match as Peay raced ahead 5-0 only to see Price roar back to lead 6-5. Unshaken, Peay focused on the task at hand and took the last two racks to win the event.
