Rematch Goes to HohmannThe 2003 World Pool Championship final match was revisited in the second round, with the same results. Thorsten “The Hitman” Hohmann played stellar pool in order to defeat Alex Pagulayan 8-6, with several break and run-outs on Hohmann’s side.As the players have found out, the break is a huge part of who wins and who loses. “I think I broke a little better than he did. I still had some unforced errors and some bad misses, but I could hold my nerves together,” Hohmann reported. “He didn’t make too many mistakes, although he came dry on the break. Now I have a big match against Marlon, and I think the winner of our match will have a big, big chance to make it into tomorrow.”IPT discussion forumDay 6 image galleryMatch schedule for July 28, 2006Interestingly, three members of Hohmann’s group—himself, Marlon Manalo, and Marcus Chamat have two wins so far, while the other half has none.
A deflated Pagulayan reported afterward, “I’ve been playing bad … played bad in the first one and now this one too. I just hope I can play better, but I don’t know if I can make it.”Pagulayan was one of two Filipinos to not win their second-round match. Francisco Bustamante lost hill-hill in the 12:30 p.m. round to … another Filipino, Ronato Alcano. Manalo dusted Gabe Owen 8-4 in a match that saw Manalo take two or three racks for every one of Owen’s. Rodolfo Luat triumphed over Larry Nevel in a hill-hill match, and Dennis Orcollo soundly defeated Ralf Souquet 8-4.Team U.K., though, is still alive, as Darren Appleton bested former snooker star Quinten Hann 8-5 and Daryl Peach defeated David Matlock by the same score.Efren Reyes triumphed over Evgeny Stalev of Russia in their second-round match that had spectators on the edge of their seats. After making a cross-corner bank shot on the 8 ball, with the cue at one end of the table and the 8 frozen on the rail at the other, Reyes brought the score to double-hill. An early miss gave the table to Stalev; however, he fired in a ball too hard and it rattled, and with a great break-out shot, Reyes was out.Round 5 Group 79Q. HannE. StalevE. ReyesL. NevelD.
