Reno Winners Bracket Narrows to Eight By InsidePOOL StaffThe winners’ bracket matches for the Reno Open began at 7 p.m. and ended at 9 p.m. This biannual tournament is being sponsored and promoted by the Sands Regency Hotel and Casino in Reno, NV, and is one the premier events in the world of pool.Ironically, it was “Rocket” Rodney Morris’ match with Arturo Rivera that finished last. Rivera, a veteran California player, held the upper hand throughout the match. It was perhaps his measured play that got Morris off his own game, for Rivera does not rush. Down 5-2, Morris missed a makeable 4 ball, and Rivera kept plunging ahead. When Rivera reached the hill with his opponent at 4, Morris fought back and won the next three games, but he missed a key 7 ball and gave Rivera the match 9-7.
Scott “The Freezer” Frost, who performed the impossible on Thursday evening by sending Johnny Archer to one-loss side courtesy of a 9-4 win, matched up with Maryland young gun Mike Davis. Frost had the lead through most of the match, and up 7-4, it looked as if nothing would stop him from continuing on in the winners’ bracket. However, a missed 7 ball when Frost was up 7-5 gave Davis the chance he needed to catch Frost, and with a two-pack, Davis defeated him 9-7.The only hill-hill match in this round was between Max Eberle and Troy Frank. Frank, who has been curiously absent from many of the pro events of late, came back from a 4-1 deficit to tie at 7 with Eberle. They traded games until both were on the hill, and then when Eberle scratched on his last break, Frank ran the table and won the match 9-8. Defending champion John Schmidt whizzed past Arizona player Jimmy Mendoza, who was rarely seen at the table, by the score of 9-2. one-pocket pro Cliff Joyner sent Canadian Paul Potier to the one-loss side 9-4. San Diego player Louis Ulrich, who is currently running the San Diego 9-Ball Tour with his wife, Connie, was defeated by Jose Parica 9-7. Reigning U.S. Open champion Jeremy Jones sent Tony Annigoni packing 9-2. The winners’ bracket will see one more round on Friday night. Joyner will play Rivera, Parica will meet countryman Sambajon, Jones will play Davis, and Schmidt will match up with Frank.Visit InsidePOOL for the latest in the sport of billiards and pool.
