Reyes Vows to Play Better in Next RoundEfren Reyes overcame his shaky start to the 2006 Philippines World Pool Championship as he cruised past Roy Apancho of Indonesia to secure his place in the knock-out stages while a nation held their collective breaths.Reyes, known as The Magician, had looked a bundle of nerves in his opening two Group Two games, losing hill-hill to Tony Crosby of the USA on day one and then winning by a similar tight margin over Poland’s Radoslaw Babica on day two.In front of another capacity crowd at the PICC in Manila and needing a win to advance, Reyes looked an improvement as he moved into a 5-2 lead.Discuss the 2006 Philippines World Pool Championship
Apancho, who needed just four racks to go through ahead of Crosby, who had earlier beaten Babica 8-5, took the eighth rack to give himself some hope.Reyes, 52, from Angeles City , won the next to lead 6-3 but Apancho, breaking in the next, composed himself to clear and ensure his position in the knock-out stages. The Filipino legend got the better of the remainder of the match to run out a 8-5 winner.“It’s always good to win the first rack,” Reyes told a packed press room post-match.“There is a lot of pressure playing in the Philippines and this is a very tough tournament. There are favourites losing to unknowns and it’s anybody’s ball game with a lot of good players. I will not waste this chance though and I will play much better in the knock-out stage.”
