Second Round Complete at Billiards TournamentTeam Philippines, fresh off their big win at the World Cup of Pool, has continued in that same vein so far at the World Open. In the second round, Francisco Bustamante met Wade Crane and, with three break and run-outs, won the match 8-4. Efren “Bata” Reyes won by the same margin over Mike LeBron, only notching one break and run.Discuss the IPT World Open 8-Ball ChampionshipVisit the IPT World Open 8-Ball Championship Image GalleryDennis Orcollo, who took third place at the North American Open, bested Jackie Broadhurst. Tammie Jones had no more luck, suffering an 8-1 loss to David Matlock, who is replacing Hall of Famer Jim Rempe, who was unable to make it because of personal reasons. Another Hall of Fame member, Loree Jon Jones, went up against a determined Steve Moore in the second round. Moore held a 4-0 lead but got spooked by a photographer, allowing Jones to tie the match at 4 apiece. Hall of Famer Ewa Laurance met her match in snooker star Quinten Hann of Australia 8-3, and Rico Diks of The Netherlands bested Linda Carter 8-2. Two ladies had double-hill matches in the second round with different results: Gerda Hofstatter lost to Lee Huewagen, while Sarah Ellerby won her second match of the day against Wayne Catledge.
One-pocket master Cliff Joyner qualified for this event by winning in Spring Hill, FL, at Capone’s. After winning his match against Jeff Melton by a whopping 8-1 with multiple break and run-outs, he said, “I liked the way I played. I needed to set a tone after my first match, and the second match was much better. I’m getting into a groove and I like the way I’m playing, so I have a chance to do well.”Former U.S. Open champion Gabe Owen won his match against Grady “The Professor” Mathews 8-3, saying, “I started out pretty good - ran out the first two racks then overhit a ball in the next rack. The cloth was a lot slicker, so the cue ball got away a little more. I struggled and made some mistakes, and he was up on me, then I made a real good out. He started making mistakes and felt rushed - we both had some warnings because we had like three safety games in a row at the beginning.”There was a bit of controversy involving this match, which Owen explained. “He [Mathews] was saying I should be penalized because I was playing slow … I’ve never been accused of that. I’m not “Machine Gun” Luc [Salvas], but I’m not Danny Basavich either. I play the same pace as everybody else.” So far the only penalties to be meted out have been for slow play.Basavich experienced problems with his match against Danny Harriman and was sent away with an 8-3 loss. He commented, “Things are going a lot better than the last event when I had a cracked rib. I’ve been working out and I lost like twelve pounds since last time. I played real well and I’m one and one. I feel a lot of times two out of four is a good shot to get in, but I’m looking to go three and one.”“There should be a little more time between the matches,” he added. “Kevin and Deno are doing a great job … I”m so proud of them.”Round 1 GROUP 1T.
