Strickland Incurs Fine, Morris Runs Six Racks in Billiards TournamentThe Germans playing in Monday’s matches are going strong in the second round, with Oliver Ortmann’s defeat of Keith McCready 8-0 and Thomas Engert’s 8-3 victory over Tony Chohan.“Yeah, my break worked pretty well so I made six run-outs and four or five were very easy, I could not make a mistake,” reported Ortmann after his match. “He missed like, at least one shot, it was not hard work, almost easy to run out. I think the table broke better for me—in the first match it didn’t. That table broke totally different, so I always made one in the side and corner. I changed my shaft so I got less deflection off the break and have better cue ball control, and that worked out.”Discuss the IPT World Open 8-Ball ChampionshipVisit the IPT World Open 8-Ball Championship Image Gallery“I feel so far pretty confident,” he continued. “I won the first two matches, and even if I lose the next one, which I don’t hope, I think a few more games should let me go through to the next level.”The other Europeans are going strong today as well. Dutchman Niels Feijen won a decisive 8-2 match over Lee Chenman, Alex Lely defeated Miyuki Sakai 8-4, and Mika Immonen of Finland won by the same score over Joseph Minici.
Immonen said afterward, “It was my first match—I got off to a good start, broke and ran the first two racks and ran the first four of five. But then I made a couple of errors. The guy was a little rattled. I feel good, though, I just basically found out today what’s wrong with my break, so it’s solid now.“I’m fired up for the whole event,” he continued with animation. “There are a couple I know in my group—Frank and Wiseman—they are both very solid players, then there is one I don’t know [Ben Nunan] but I feel very confident. If I beat either Troy or Ronnie I will be good. Plus my eight-two score gives me a good margin.”Raj “Hitman” Hundal bested Ohio’s Aaron Czetli 8-5 and reported, “I didn't really play too good. I felt good, though. I think the first six breaks none of us made a ball. In all fairness I made a couple of mistakes I should not have made and could have won the game more comfortable—it should not have been that close. But this is pool, in all fairness he played well and I didn’t expect him to play that well. Aaron is a new player, he’s only just started, and I’m sure in due time he will improve. I’m not bothered about the group—it’s the game you play, not the group. My only problem is sometimes I get over-confident.”Jasmin Ouschan recorded an 8-0 victory over Tom Storm in the second round—because of Storm’s disqualification in the first round, the remaining members of Group 26 will notch 8-0 wins against him. This is also the case for Ed Kelly’s group.Interestingly, there are only three Filipinos in Groups 21-40—Ramil Gallego, Santos Sambajon Jr., and Edwin Montal, though Montal lives in Canada. Montal won his second match of the day, defeating Jayson Shaw 8-2, while Gallego bested Ray Martin 8-3 in the second round. Sambajon lost his first match of the day 8-6 to Ben Davies in the second round.Team USA scored a win when “Rocket” Rodney Morris defeated Canada’s Tyler Edey 8-3 with a whopping six break and run-outs. “I played good,” said the Hawaiian modestly. “The last tournament I didn’t have much breaks and run, then here I had six—that’s pretty high, pretty awesome. I got a new break cue and worked hard on the break because I felt my break really let me down in the last tournament. As a result, six break and runs and eight wins.”Other wins for the US players include Johnny Archer over James Roberts 8-1, Corey Deuel over Helena Thornfeldt 8-2, Jeff Beckley over Frankie Hernandez 8-5, Mike “The Mouth” Sigel over Howard Vickery 8-2, Tang Hoa over Jerry Calderon 8-5, Shannon Daulton over David Broxson 8-2, and Earl Strickland over Pete Fusco. As usual, a bit of controversy surrounded Strickland’s match, though not in the usual fashion. “I thought I was going to lose it … they came over and fined me a thousand dollars—and that didn’t help my mental attitude—for wearing a shirt that cost a hundred dollars,” Strickland exclaimed, “but that doesn’t have anything to with it. Some of the other players at the last tournament were wearing these pullovers. It’s not a cheap one, but it still doesn’t fit the dress code.“It’s my own fault for following the other players ‘cause they are idiots when it comes to dressing—they are going to try to abuse the dress code—I knew that—and it’s the same thing. I followed with them and it’s cost me a thousand dollars. That kinda derailed me a little bit. The guy played pretty good, I played bad in the beginning, and then he didn’t make nothing on the break and I shut him out, and that's what great players do.”Round 1 GROUP 1T. HohmannS. MooreL.
