Third Round of Billiards Tournament Running SmoothlySo far today, there have been few true upsets to mark the day. The Filipinos billiard players continue to dominate, most remaining undefeated so far. Dennis Orcollo, the Bellflower, CA, qualifier winner last March, defeated Hall of Famer Mike “Tennessee Tarzan” Massey 8-2 in the third round. Efren Reyes, who was one of the final six in the North American Open, won his second match of the day, besting Oezer Bulunmaz by a deflating 8-1 score.Russia’s Evgeny Stalev, another one of the final six at the North American Open, remains undefeated for the day, winning his second match against Dallas West 8-3. North American Open champ Thorsten “The Hitman” Hohmann lost his second match in the third round, bested by Warren Kiamco 8-3. Kiamco, who qualified for the IPT in March in Boston, MA, notched three break and runs on the former world champion. Reigning world champion Chia-Ching Wu won his second match for the day, besting Hung Ming Chu 8-6.Discuss the IPT World Open 8-Ball ChampionshipVisit the IPT World Open 8-Ball Championship Image GalleryAllen Hopkins ran into Grady Mathews in the third round and notched his first win of the day 8-4.
“The match went well—we struggled in the beginning, but we had like five or six break and run-outs, so that was good. I played okay. This is all new ground to me, especially for the older guys. The format is different and there are short sets, so there is a lot of pressure. A guy runs three or four racks on you, and you’re in trouble. One bad break or mistake and you’re in trouble.”Shannon Daulton and Dennis Hatch stopped by to put in some practice time before their matches tomorrow. “We are real good friends and came to hit balls,” explained Daulton. “We kept score and tried our best. The score was seven-seven so we called it a draw, so no one walked away feeling like they lost. We were just trying to get used to the tables and everything. I like this setup much more than the Venetian—the lighting is better and the audience is closer. The tables are still breaking tough. It seems the ball behind the one goes in the side most often, at least that’s what I see. It’s a tough tournament and field … you just need to run out when it’s your turn.”Round 1 GROUP 1T. HohmannS.
