Tom Storm Disqualified from IPT Billiards TournamentThe second day of play at the World Open 8-Ball Championship kicked off with controversy, as Tom Storm was disqualified for using a cue with a phenolic tip. Storm, who hails from Sweden, was playing Roland Acosta when his cue stick came to the attention of the officials. Tournament director Deno Andrews was notified and, upon examining the cue, disqualified Storm from the tournament. Though Storm tried to argue with Andrews, it was to no avail. It was very clearly laid out at the players meeting that if you use a phenolic tip you’re disqualified, so unfortunately in the first round we had to disqualify him and he forfeits his prize money.”
The donut factory has been churning out 8-0 scores this morning. Tony “The Tornado” Drago from Malta was the first to finish, thumping opponent Tony “T-Rex” Chohan 8-0, which included four break and run-outs. In his same group, 2004 Player of the Year Thomas Engert busted Zlatko Jakulj 8-0, saying, “In the beginning I made a few mistakes—of course it was the first match and a new table and arena. The first match is always the toughest. My opponent made some mistakes in the game, and I took the chance and won.”Back to the break, Engert added, “I'm not breaking well because of the slow cloth. I don’t play too much eight-ball in Europe. Ten years ago I played a lot but then only nine-ball.”George Breedlove concurred with Engert’s opinion on the first match of the day, though he won over Aaron Czetli 8-1. “Well, the first morning match is always the toughest. The score was eight to one, and I didn’t play good. Just waking up was giving me a problem—it was tough to get going. My opponent did not play good at all, missed with ball in hand once.
