Top Pros Picked Off In Day ThreeReno OpenBy Rick DavisDay Three of the Reno Open pool tournament brought down the hatchet upon many of the favored billiard players. One of the first to go was billiards player Troy Frank, followed soon after by Kim Davenport and Robb Saez. Davenport had been shut out 9-0 by past winner Santos Sambajon Jr., then smoked again on the one-loss side 9-1 by Francisco Galindo. Saez, on the other hand, put up a fight—after a 9-5 slap by Sambajon, Saez fell just short of a double-hill match against Joey Gebron.
All of the afternoon round’s eliminated players brought the field down to 72, while the two evening rounds are both on the winners’ side. Matching up tonight will be Canada’s Tyler Edey and Rafael Martinez, as well as Mark Tadd and former U.S. Open champion Gabe Owen. Others still on the winners’ side will see some stiff competition within the coming rounds. Favorites like Tony Chohan, Sambajon Jr., Sparky Ferrell, Shane Van Boening, and Cliff Joyner have all had little problems to this point; however, as the rounds progress, they will be forced to match up.Day Four on Friday will swing a big axe across the board, eliminating more than half the remaining field, which will again be reduced on Saturday so the top four can return Sunday.Visit InsidePOOL for the latest news in the sport of billiards and pool.
