U.S. Bar Table 9-Ball Championships Near Completedby Rick Davis
Day 2 of the U.S. Bar Table Championships zipped along at an impressive speed as the players passed the event’s halfway point. On the winners’ side the cream clearly rose to the top as all the brackets contained well-known billiard players. Tyler Edey found his way through several matches, defeating Reno Open champion Rich Orem along the way, until he ran into Rafael Martinez who dominated the board with wins over Gabe Owen and Jerry Matchin just before he sent Edey west.
Also tearing up the winners’ side was Shane Van Boening, Warren Kiamco, and Dave Martin, who, along with Martinez, claimed a quarter of the winners’ side chart. Boening dropped the axe on Gandy Valle then Steve Rector to get there, while Kiamco defeated Tinsley Johnson, who had sent Rodolfo Luat to the one-loss side earlier. That left Martin to defeat a very strong Kim Davenport after he had dealt with Antonio Gabica and Jui-Lung Chen.
On the one-loss side mayhem abounded. Owen was eliminated by Sal Butera after his first round on the one-loss side, and Butera managed another three wins before Valle showed him the door. Valle faces Stan Tourangeau next. The other three one-loss side boards feature matches between Glenn Atwell and Eric Charleton, Jason Williams and C. McDonald, and Jeff Heath and Edwin Montal.
Other notables not making the cut include Luat, who was edged out by Atwell, and Orem, who was eliminated by Tourangeau.
Things will continue to work their way down Thursday, and then a small contingent will return to finish the event and crown a champion Friday. Also, with a slight overlap, the U.S. Bar Table 8-Ball Championships will get underway Friday afternoon.
