WPBA Elimination Rounds Begin by InsidePOOL StaffThe elimination rounds began earlier Friday afternoon at the WPBA 2006 Brunswick San Diego Classic, held at Alpine Casino in San Diego, CA. A top field of 64 players turned out for this eventIt was a big night for Leslie Anne Rodgers (pictured right). To get her WPBA tour card, she needs four top-half finishes in the last ten consecutive events. She had two going into this event. She was on the hill 8-5 against Stacey Hurst in the one-loss side bracket in the second round, and Hurst came back to knot the score at double-hill. After approximately 20 minutes of incredible action, Hurst hung up the 6 ball, and Rodgers cleared to win the match for her third top-half finish. Megan Minerich defeated Gerda Hofstatter 9-5, Tracie Hines defeated Xiaoting Pan 9-1, while Dawn Hopkins defeated Tiffany Nelson 9-5, and Rodgers bested Melissa Little 9-5. But the biggest surprise of the night is that the number-three-ranked Monica Webb took an early exit, sent to the left side by Hsian Huang in a hill-hill match and then ousted by Bonnie Coats 9-8 again.
All the big guns are still undefeated, and the winners’ bracket will play Friday night, with Karen Corr going up against Belinda Campos-Calhoun and Allison Fisher matching up with Jennifer Chen. Defending champion Kelly Fisher defeated Darlene Stinson 9-1 and then Melissa Herndon 9-6 to advance to meet Jeanette “The Black Widow” Lee.Visit InsidePOOL for the latest news in the sport of billiards and pool.
