WPBA Titans Clash in Floridaby Rick DavisThe fourth stop on this year’s WPBA tour is underway at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Hollywood, FL. The event drew a full field of 64 players, which includes all of the top-25-ranked women’s players such as Allison Fisher, Karen Corr, and Jeanette Lee. View the tournament bracketThursday’s action did not include any elimination rounds, although matches were tense on the winners’ side. “The Duchess of Doom,” Allison Fisher, blew past her opponents Debbie Schjodt 9-3 and Sarah Rousey 9-0, one of only two 9-0 matches to take place. Sarah Ellerby, currently ranked number 10 on tour, squeaked past her first match with Darlene Stinson 9-7, then took much more control in her second, against Stacy Hurst, only allowing Hurst two games. Ellerby commented, “The first match is always difficult,” when asked about her dramatic improvement. Also, Ellerby, like many others were plagued with break problems, causing the tournament director to rack many racks across the various matches. Ellerby called the breaks “scrappy” for all the players, which she said was causing a lot of safeties. This was apparent as the matches ran over time and nearly one-quarter were put on the clock.
Reaching the single elimination phase of the event on Saturday was on everyone’s mind. Karen “The Irish Invader” Corr said, “Every match is big here, because you want to stay on that side of the board.” She, too, had her share of breaking problems but simply said, “I’m just making the best of the opportunities.”With play winding down for the night, everyone will return in the morning for the beginning of elimination play, which will carry the event to the top 16 round to begin on Saturday.Visit InsidePOOL for the latest news in the sport of billiards and pool.
