Winners’-Bracket Final Set Between Takami and AlcaideDavid Alcaide was the first player to make it through the second winners’ bracket’s round of matches on Saturday at the IPT’s fifth and final qualification event. Held at House of Billiards in Weert, The Netherlands, the event will wrap up Sunday and round out the final 150 tour players.Alcaide, who hails from Spain, broke and ran the first two racks, won the next, and then broke and ran out the next for a daunting 5-0 lead. Cohen was only able to put four games under his belt before Alcaide, a BCA and VNEA Masters champion, won the match 10-4.The UK’s Daryl Peach sent Hiroshi Takenaka to the one-loss side—after overcoming a 3-0 deficit, he won the match 10-6. Peach went on to face Alcaide in a match that saw the lead swing from 2-0 Peach to 6-3 Alcaide. At that point, Peach mounted a comeback, running out five racks in a row to reach the hill 9-6. He came up dry on his last break, and Alcaide cleared that rack and broke and ran out the next three to win the match 10-9.
Germany’s Thomas Seiffert came back from a 7-2 deficit in his winners’-side match against fellow countryman Roman Hybler, winning the next eight games in a row (breaking and running out four in a row) to take the match 10-7. Last to finish, Japan’s Goh Takami sent Steve Moore of Atlanta, GA, to the one-loss side after a seesaw match that ended 10-8. Takami and Seiffert met in the other winners’-side match, with Takami practically whitewashing the German, winning 10-1. Alex Lely won his second pair of matches, defeating Antonell Christian Judet 8-3 and Evangelos Vettas in a hill-hill nailbiter to win another $2,000. Afterward, he looked tired and explained how he managed to win all four matches today. “Dig in. First of all, we had a five-day training camp with the Dutch team as preparation for the European Championships, so we’re all in stroke, well-prepared, just a little tired. Toward the end, I got really tired, but I dug in.”His Dutch counterpart, Nick Van den Berg, eventually suffered a loss, coming back from a 7-2 deficit to Brian Beekers, another Dutchman. Beekers has faced off with Van den Berg in the past but has never defeated him … until this day. When the match reached double-hill, Van den Berg came up empty on his break, and Beekers dished up to win 8-7. Though he didn’t earn the $1,000 for this match, Van den Berg scored an additional $1,000 in his match with Kenichi Uchigaki when he made two 8 balls on the break. He was able to defeat Uchigaki 8-6.Visit InsidePOOL Magazine for the latest news in the sport of billiards and pool.
