Manalo Masters the Florida Pro Tour

by Rick Davis
With the top 16 players returning to the action on Sunday, the Seminole Florida Pro Tour crowned Marlon Manalo champion of the second tour stop after an impressive string of wins.
Starting the day on the winners’ side, Manalo defeated Nathan Rose 8-4 but was sent west by a fortunate Danny Harriman. Harriman was just off defeating Corey “The Prince of Pool” Deuel 8-4 and, tied at double-hill against Manalo, Harriman missed the 1 ball to slop in the 10 and take the match, putting him in the hot seat match. On the other half, Tony Chohan bested Dennis Hatch and then Dave Grossman, both 8-5, to meet Harriman. Chohan was in high gear and in no time defeated Harriman 8-4.
On the one-loss side the gauntlet was set by the top tier players. Ignacio Chavez had a very impressive run, eliminating tour regular Adam Wheeler and Will Bilbrey, each 8-6, then drilled Hatch 8-2. For the rest of the one-loss side, hardly anyone survived more than one match. Deuel sent Tony Crosby home 8-4 then was out the door himself after Rose knocked him out 8-3. Nathan Rose, playing very strong, also eliminated the current Florida Pro Tour Championship champion, Robb Saez, 8-6 after watching him slip past current Reno Open champion Richie Orem double-hill.
{sidebar id=1}Cleaning up the rest of the matches, Rose ousted Grossman double-hill and Manalo ejected Chavez 8-6. In the quarterfinals Manalo eliminated Rose 8-5, but in the semifinals, Harriman made an error on a safety, giving Manalo the win double-hill. With the finals on hand, a single race to 9 would determine the winners, and Manalo kept nearly all the racks to himself, taking Chohan 9-3 to claim the event.
