Nevel Makes a Big Billiard Comeback

The Choo-Choo Classic III got underway April 21 at the Diamond Billiard Club in Chattanooga, TN, where a stacked 44-player field clashed in double-elimination play with a race to 9 on both sides of the chart. After the smoke cleared from the event, it was Larry Nevel who came back from a round-three loss to sweep through the west side and claim the event.
After the first day of play completed the cream rose to the top as the cannon fodder was eliminated. Early action on the second day saw Jon “Hennessee” Pinegar defeat Billy Young while Johnny Archer sent Tony Watson west. Also, on the winners’ side, Cliff Joyner bested Hall of Famer Nick Varner, while Bobby Pickle sent tournament director Shannon Daulton to the left side. Racing to the hot seat match, Joyner defeated Pickle, and Pinegar dealt Archer a loss, and then in the hot seat match Pinegar bested Joyner to claim the king of the hill title.
{sidebar id=1}While the winners’ side was sending opponents west, the one-loss side was being shaved down. Larry Nevel made his way through a pair of matches to reach the one-loss side top four, as did Watson, who eliminated Steve Moore along the way. Rounding out the four were Varner and Daulton. With only a handful of matches remaining, everyone tightened up, but it didn’t stop Daulton, who eliminated Varner and then Archer to reach the quarterfinals. Nor did it stop Nevel, who knocked out Watson and Pickle.
In the quarterfinals Nevel kept in gear to oust Daulton, then in the semifinals he showed Joyner the door to make his way to finals where Pinegar waited. At breakneck speed, Nevel sliced through Pinegar 9-3 and 9-4 in the true double-elimination format and claimed the title after a grueling 7-match win streak for the day.
