“Rocket” Rodney Morris Wins the Reno OpenAfter five days of grueling competition, Rodney Morris came out victorious at the Reno Open, held at the Sands Regency Hotel and Casino in Reno, NV. Morris defeated Cliff Joyner, who hails from Rocky Mountain, NC, 9-4 in a match lasting just under one hour to take the $12,000 first-place prize.A large crowd had gathered on bleachers and chairs in the Regency Ballroom to watch the undefeated Morris take on Joyner, whom he had beaten 9-0 in the hot seat match. "The Rocket" was cold-blooded and efficient while Joyner was ice cold in the early match.
Joyner was red hot coming into the finals after beating Alex "The Lion" Pagulayan, who earlier defeated Jose Parica in a hill-hill match. He ran the last two tables of a close match to win going away 9-7. Joyner took the first game of the final match, and from there it was neck and neck. Morris had the momentum and wouldn't give it up as he pushed to a 5-3 lead, then Joyner won his final game of the afternoon. At 6-4, Morris was greedy with the table and allowed Joyner one shot on the way to a 7-4 lead. It was more of the same in the next game as Joyner's single attempt at the one ball scratched. It was all Morris needed to take a commanding 8-4 lead. In the final game, Joyner's only shot was a beautiful jump shot which scored his target ball, but scratched. The crowd could see what was coming and Morris delivered it in style, putting away the last four balls and the championship.Visit InsidePOOL for the latest news in the sport of billiards and pool.
