16 Remain in Carolina Women's Billiard Classic
The WPBA's Carolina Women's Billiard Classic, held this week in Rocky Mount, NC, has whittled its field down to the final 16 players. The format now switches to single elimination, with two rounds to be played through tonight to get to the final four, who will return Sunday for the televised matches.

Hall of Famer Ewa Laurance was one of the players from the one-loss side to make it through. "The Striking Viking" had her last match against Hsin Huang, and the two made it a double-hill battle. "Whoa baby!" exclaimed Laurance as her cue ball cruised into position for the final 9 ball. She got down on the ball, stroked, got back up, and then smoothly pocketed the 9 to advance, ending Huang's tournament.
Val Finnie and Sarah Ellerby had another hill-hill nailbiter that saw Finnie scratch on her last break. Unable to capitalize, though, Ellerby hooked herself behind the 6 ball for the 4. She fouled, and a relieved Finnie dished up for the 9-8 win.
Finnie's friend Kelly Fisher also made it into the top 16, ousting Helena "The Sledgehammer" Thornfeldt in yet another close 9-7 match, while Kim White eliminated Debbie Schjodt 9-6 to advance. Earlier, Vivian Villareal ousted Rachael Abbink 9-4, Morgan Steinman defeated Melissa Little 9-6, Tracie Hines won 9-4 over Anna Kostanian, and Kim Shaw bested Julia Gabriel 9-1.
The final 16 matches will begin Saturday evening and will be:
Ewa Laurance vs. Gerda Hofstatter
Val Finnie vs. Karen Corr
Kim White vs. Monica Webb
Kelly Fisher vs. Xiaoting Pan
Tracie Hines vs. Ga-Young Kim
Kim Shaw vs. Allison Fisher
Vivian Villareal vs. Jeanette Lee
Morgan Steinman vs. Tiffany Nelson
