8-Ball Championships Offer Unique Fundraising Opportunity for Boys & Girls ClubColorado Springs, CO - The Billiard Congress of America (BCA) holds its National 8-Ball Championships at the Riviera Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas May 9-17, and preparations are many and varied. One of the challenges: stuff 8,000 goodie bags for players coming to town for the tournament. What would have taken untold hours for the BCA staff has turned into a win-win situation for the BCA and the Boys & Girls Club of Las Vegas. When a BCA staff member approached the Boys & Girls Club with the proposition of bag stuffing in exchange for a donation, the local non-profit was delighted. "Do you know how many cars these kids would have to wash to make that much money?" Bob Ranney, President of Boys & Girls Club of Las Vegas, asked rhetorically.
So, from now until the start of the 8-Ball Championships, approximately 10 kids will stuff envelopes in a series of one-hour shifts until the project is completed. In addition to helping the Club raise money, the young volunteers will receive an unexpected bonus - the chance to be ball boys and girls at the "Challenge the Stars" fundraiser on July 9 in Las Vegas at 7:00 p.m. in the Sands Convention Center. This annual fundraiser, staged on opening night of the BCA's Annual Trade Expo, is a benefit for the Billiard Education Foundation. The event allows the public to pay an entry fee to challenge a professional pool player or just watch the fun. Young people from the Boys & Girls Club will rub elbows with internationally known pool champions such as: Jeanette Lee, Allison Fisher, Karen Corr, Loree Jon Jones, Ewa Laurance, Charlie Williams, Buddy Hall and more.Also pleased with the collaboration is BCA Executive Director Stephen D. Ducoff. "This collaboration is part of a nationwide effort to work with the Boys & Girls Club as part of the BCA's sports initiatives. Young people are the pool players of the future - and the skills they learn at the billiard table will help them at school and throughout life," he concludes.
