9-Ball Division of Carolina’s Open Goes to ArcherBy InsidePOOL StaffAfter cruising through a field of 121 of the toughest 9-ballers in the states, Johnny “The Scorpion” Archer defeated current U.S. Open champion Jeremy Jones in the final match 15-11 for the victory. The event, held at Fast Eddie’s in Goldsboro, SC, began on August 18 with a one-pocket event that was won by Scott Frost and concluded on Sunday, August 22, with the 9-ball division that had a total payout of $17,300.Although the final match between Archer and Jones was a rematch of the Big Apple finals earlier this month, there were some excellent matches beforehand. Archer met Shannon “The Cannon” Daulton, a former World All-Around Champion at the Derby City Classic, in the hot seat match and sent him off to the one-loss side, while Jones narrowly escaped defeat at the hands of “Rocket” Rodney Morris, newly relocated to Florida, in the quarterfinal match.
Daulton, who has been noticeably absent from many of the bigger events recently, never was given much of a chance in the match for third place against Jones. Up 10-0 in the blink of an eye, Jones only allowed his opponent to put one rack until his belt before he took the match 11-1.In the final match with Archer, “Double J” took a five-game lead at the beginning, but InsidePOOL Magazine’s 2003 Player of the Year fought back to turn the match around. With his awesome break at his command, Archer swept under the finish line with a 15-11 victory.
