Alcaide Comes Back to Defeat DragoA heart-broken Tony Drago went out of the 2004 Taiwan World Pool Championship on Wednesday evening at the World Trade Center as a game David Alcaide of Spain came back from the brink of defeat to steal the match from the quick-fire Maltese potter.Alcaide, a 25 year-old from Malaga in Southern Spain, was highly rated by his fellow pros despite bookmakers pricing him up at 2–1 and upwards for the match. A previous visit to the World Pool Championship in 2001 resulted in a top 16 finish which confirmed the Spaniard’s class.Drago started the faster as Alcaide looked a little nervous under the TV lights. There was never much in it throughout but Drago was the first to the hill as he lead 8–6.The Spaniard though, dug deep and ran out the next to get to 8–7 and a well-controlled break and run took the match to 8–8.Tournament Brackets for the 2004 World Pool Championship
Alcaide had a match-winning piece of luck in the final game as he narrowly avoided scratching on a safety. Drago’s response was not precise enough and Alcaide held his nerve to complete a great win and set up a last 32 clash Po-cheng Kuo.Afterwards Alcaide was delighted in victory. “I was very, very nervous at the start. Tony has much more experience in the TV conditions, he said.“When he got to the hill, it was just a question of hoping that he would make a mistake and let me in. I’m so happy to be in the next round.“I don’t know much about Kuo but clearly he is a good player. I’m on a learning curve at the moment and just hoping for the best.”Tournament Brackets for the 2004 World Pool ChampionshipTable Schedules for Round of 32Visit InsidePOOL for the latest news from the sport of billiards and pool.
