Alcaide is the Grand Master at the BCA League Championshipsby InsidePOOL StaffThe singles divisions at the 2005 BCA League Championships wrapped up on Tuesday, May 17, with the different winners being crowned throughout the evening. The league championships have brought almost 7,000 pool players to the Riviera Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, NV, to vie for $95,000 in prize money.David Alcaide of Spain took first place in the new Men’s Grand Masters division, which had a full field of 32 players. Anyone not playing in the BCA Open 9-Ball Championships was able to sign up for this event, and the competition was fierce. Jesse Bowman of Moline, IL, suffered his first loss to Alcaide but came back to meet him in the double-elimination finals. While most of the divisions were a race to 7, the Men’s Grand Masters went to 11. Bowman eked out an 11-8 win in the first set to force a second, but problems with his break caught up with him. They traded games until the score seesawed to the hill, and Alcaide broke and ran out to claim his new title with an 11-10 victory.
In the women’s pro event, Kelly Fisher of England, who won the WPBA’s most recent stop in North Carolina, was ousted by Laura Smith 9-6. on the winners’ side, Allison Fisher continues to dominate, lodging a 9-1 win over Sarah Ellerby. Fisher will play Vivian Villareal, who won her match over Stacy Hurst 9-5, on Wednesday. The UPA’s number-one ranked player, Johnny Archer, is still going strong in the men’s pro division, scoring an 11-6 win over Sweden’s Marcus Chamat. He will meet Sandor Tot of Hungary on Wednesday. Tot met Tony Crosby, who was responsible for sending Earl Strickland to the west side on Monday, and won 11-4. Germany’s Thomas Engert suffered his first loss of the event to Jose Garcia, who will play “Marvelous Marlon” Manalo of the Philippines on Wednesday. Manalo dealt defending champion Tony Robles his first loss on Tuesday afternoon 11-9.
