Annual Tri-State Tour Invitational Goes to JehleTri-State Tour / Manhattan, NYby John LeymanThe ninth annual Tri-State Tour Invitational brough together skilled amateurs at Amsterdam Billiards & Bar in Manhattan, NY, all hoping to sharpen their game en route to the pro circuit and looking to advance in class. The July 8-9 weekend was a huge success with 12 A and A+ players, 32 B and B+ players, 32 C and C+ players, and 24 D and D+ players showing up to play in their respective classes.Amsterdam Billiards & Bar owners Greg and Ethan Hunt, along with the staff, were gracious hosts and provided a professional and engaging atmosphere for the event. They donated two $400 Espiritu cues and two Silver Fox cue cases to the event, as well as their room and the table time.
The C- and D-class players kicked off the event, with Caroline Pao playing strong in the C+ class, her only real challenge coming in the finals against Beito Perez. Perez had only lost to Pao earlier in the day and was determined not to lose twice to her. In the finals, he went out in front and won the match 8-6. The C class was won by Kamran Jehle, who bested Dave Shlemperis on the hill to win. Shlemperis’ only other loss was in the match to get in to the hot against Kamran. In the D+ class, Scott Abramowitz dominated all and won the event by besting Mike Poisler in the finals 5-3, who had only lost to Abramowitz in the event. The D class saw Maya DelVillar defeating all comers, including Jim Ireland in the finals 5-3.The upper classes came to play Sunday, with Jesse Rice cruising through the one-loss side of the A+/A chart after losing his first match of the day to Mhet Vergara. Rice again met Vergara in the last match of the one-loss side and defeated him 7-4 to get into the finals against the unscathed Wali Muhammad, winning 9-4. Nelson Marte played better as the day progressed until he met Liz Ford in the hot seat match in the B+ class, where Ford played almost perfect pool and bested him 7-4. Nelson went on to oust Tim Edmonds 7-4 on the one-loss side to get to the finals, where he played well enough to defeat Ford 9-6. In the B class, Matt Daspin played extremely well and finished the tournament undefeated and almost unchallanged. Michael Tosado made it to the finals and put up the best fight, but Daspin was unimpressed and just kept rolling and won the match 7-4. This left the top players in each class to meet in the playoffs. Nelson Marte met Matt Daspin in the B+/B-class finals, and with both players at their best, it was a great match, with Marte winning on the hill. Marte continued his dominance and once again crushed his next opponent, Rice, in the A-B playoff 7-1, earning the honor of competing for the overall champion. Maya Delvillar, who was enjoying her wins, went on to best Abramowitz on the hill in the D+/D-class finals. Kamran Jehle, a 16-year-old who has only been playing the game about a year, continued to impress with wins over Beito Perez 6-2 and Maya DelVillar 7-4 to get to the final match of the evening and play for the overall champion title.Kamran moved ahead early in the final match against Marte, with play much higher then his ranking, along with some luck and some combos. He pulled ahead of Marte, who just did not get a chance to get started, and won the match 8-3, earning the 2005-2006 Tri-State Tour Invitational Champion title. Most Improved PlayerMichael Yednak (pictured above right)Sportman of the YearTony Eglesias (pictured left)Open1st PlaceJonathon Smith2nd PlaceDanny Barouty3rd PlaceFrankie HernandezA+ - A -Class6th Place Overall 380 Points1st PlaceJesse Rice2nd PlaceMhet Vergara3rd PlaceStewart WarnockB+-Class4th Place Overall 820 Points1st PlaceCarl Yusuf Khan2nd PlaceMario Sahatjian3rd PlaceAriel RiveraB-Class2nd Place Overall 1160 Points1st PlaceMichael Tosado2nd PlaceMatt Daspin3rd PlaceJames DorseyC+-Class1st Place Overall 1305 Points1st PlaceTony Eglesias2nd PlaceJorge Rodriquez3rd PlaceSean BolandC-Class3rd Place Overall 1050 Points1st PlaceJohn MacArthur2nd PlaceGreg Hecht3rd PlaceSteve FalconerD+-Class5th Place Overall 785 Points1st PlaceMike Davie2nd PlaceDave Fitzpatrick3rd PlaceTom TomasovicD-Class7th Place Overall 195 Points1st PlaceMike Amaya2nd PlaceJim Ireland3rd PlaceAda LioLadies1st PlaceLiz Ford2nd PlaceCaroline Pao3rd PlaceMichele Li
