Archer Picks Off the Big AppleBy Robert AnthonyIn the wee hours of Monday morning, Johnny "The Scorpion" Archer was finally declared the 2004 champion of The Big Apple 9-Ball Challenge in New York City. The final was a three-hour, race-to-13 match against 2003 U.S. Open winner Jeremy "Double J' Jones. Though Archer took the first few games, the two competitors traded wins until both were on the hill-and spectators were bleary-eyed at 2 a.m. It was Archer, however, who finally prevailed to take home the $10,000 top prize.Archer, who entered the final day of the four-day tournament undefeated, dealt an 11-7 defeat to Jose Parica on Sunday afternoon, then waited while the one-loss bracket was played down to a final challenger.
"Rocket" Rodney Morris, who had played solidly during the entire tournament, suffered a surprising 11-8 defeat against Jones, who only minutes before had squeaked out a victory over 9-ball stalwart Ralf Souquet. Jones' performance in the tournament had seemed a little lackluster up until this point, but his victories over Morris and Souquet propelled him to an 11-7 win over Filipino legend Jose Parica and won him a spot at the final table. With 93 entrants—86 of whom actually showed up to play—the Big Apple 9-Ball Challenge paid out over $43,000 in prize money.Results:1st place: Johnny Archer $10,0002nd place: Jeremy Jones $6,0003rd place: Jose Parica $3,5504th place: Rodney Morris $2,5005th/6th places: Charlie Bryant, Ralf Souquet $2,0007th/8th places: Edgar Acaba, Tony Robles $1,5009th/12th places: Thorsten Hohmann, Mika Immonen, Santos Sambajon Jr., Brian Yi $1,25013th/16th places: Francisco Bustamante, Danny Hewitt, Joey Korsiak, Hiroshi Takenaka $1,00017th/24th places: Danny Basavich, Tony Crosby, Mike Davis, Thomas Engert, Danny Harriman, Steve Lillis, Alan Rolon, Charlie Williams $700Visit InsidePOOL for the latest news in the sport of billiards and pool.
