Archer Wins Midnight Madness, Webb Retains TitleThe 20th Annual Music City 9-Ball Open crowned Johnny Archer as the champion of its Midnight Madness event at 7 a.m. Sunday morning. This single-elimination, race-to-11 event saw Archer, Shannon Daulton, Jose Parica, Chris Bartram, Steve Moore, Shane Van Boening, Rodney Hammock, David Broxson, Chuck Raulston, Jonathan Pinegar, Chad Vilmont, Brandon Ashcraft, and Scotty Townsend sign up early, while Gabe Owen, Bobby Pickle, and Bill Bailey were last-minute additions.
The $500 entry fee from each player was put in the winner-takes-all pot, and around 1 a.m., the event kicked off. Archer handily defeated Shannon Daulton in the first round, Chad Vilmont in the second, and Chris Bartram to reach the finals against South Dakota’s Shane Van Boening. Because of the early hour and the looming 10 a.m. rounds in the regular event, both finalists agreed to shorten the race to 6, which Archer won 6-2 to claim the $8,000.The women’s division finished up Sunday in the early evening. After defeating Helena Thornfeldt in the hot seat match, defending champion Monica Webb was sitting pretty and waiting for a competitor. Julie Melman was working her way through the one-loss side, besting first Sarah Rousey, who took fourth place, and then Thornfeldt to reach Webb in the finals. The task of winning two matches to one against the undefeated Webb proved too daunting for Melman, though, and Webb swept the first and only set 7-1.There are 12 players remaining in the men’s division and still a lot of matches to get through. Brandon Ashcraft, Buddy Hall, Cliff Joyner, Adam Smith, Shane Van Boening, Shannon Daulton, Gabe Owen, Jonathan Pinegar, and Chad Vilmont all remain to vie for their piece of the prize money.Visit InsidePOOL for the latest news in the sport of billiards and pool.
