Archer Wins Sudden Death 7-Ball By InsidePOOL StaffThe one-day Sudden Death 7-Ball event by Billiards International, Ltd., held at the ESPNZone in Baltimore, MD, ended in a triumph for Johnny Archer with his win over Thorsten Hohmann in the finals. Archer defeated Hohmann, who is the reigning world champion, in two sets of races to 7.In the semifinals earlier this evening, Danny Harriman faced off with Hohmann. Harriman, who won the 9-ball banks division of the Derby City Classic this January out of a field of over 300 contenders, held his own with Hohmann until the score was 6-5 Hohmann. After the German put the two balls between the cue and the object ball, Harriman made an excellent kick on the 1 in the side and then a tough 2 ball. However, he missed the 3 ball dismally, and Hohmann won the first set 7-5. The second set went hill-hill, but Harriman broke and then missed a shot early on in the last rack. With ball in hand, Hohmann easily ran out the remaining balls for the 7-6 win.
The next semifinal match that followed was between Archer and Francisco Bustamante. "Django" made several key errors in the first set, starting with the first game of the first set when he missed an easy 7 ball in the side. They knotted at 5, but then Archer won the next two in a row after a Bustamante scratch and then a 2-7 combo. In the second set, Bustamante had Archer 3-0 before his opponent got on the board. When he won the second set 7-4, he forced it into a sudden death tiebreaker. Bustamante won the lag, but then he missed an easy cut on the 3 ball. Archer, with ball in hand and three balls on the table, pocketed the remaining balls for the win.The finals were clearly dominated by Archer and his astounding break. With every smash, he pocketed at least two, if not three or four, balls at a time. With breaking and running out the norm for both Hohmann and Archer when at the table, the match sped by, but with one or two mistakes on Hohmann's part, Archer won the first set 7-5. Hohmann started out in the lead in the second set, but after a missed safety, he allowed Archer back in the match, and in no time, Archer was up 6-4.
