Ashcraft Undefeated in Billiards Choo-Choo Classicby Rick DavisThe Choo-Choo Classic was rolling in Chattanooga, TN, over the December 16 weekend where Brandon Ashcraft went undefeated, besting a very talented field. As the final day of the event dawned the top sixteen were all that remained standing. On the winners’ side Ashcraft scorched a path to the hot seat match with wins over Josh Roberts 9-3 and Claude Marrier 9-5. Meeting Ashcraft in the hot seat match was Landon Shuffett, the 13-year old young gun who had not allowed any opponent more than three racks, steamrolled Eugene Browning 9-2 and Jason Jones 9-1 to meet Ashcraft.
On the one-loss side, tournament director Shannon Daulton nearly shut out Billy Bailey 9-1 then fell to Eugene Browning. Also, on that part of the chart was Wade Crane who slipped past his early opponents, knocked out Browning 9-2 and Marrier 9-6 to reach the quarterfinals. Russ Edwards was also on his way to the finish line after an early day-two loss to Marrier, Edwards eliminated three opponents, including Jason Jones 9-0, to reach the quarterfinals. The top four had everyone sweating as Ashcraft inched past Shuffett double-hill on the winners’ side and Edwards eliminated Crane by the same margin. Edwards, now hot flew past Shuffett 9-4 in the semifinals to reach Ashcraft in the finals. An expected double-hill thriller came up just shy in the finals. With the set at 8-7 Edwards got a bad roll and then fouled a combo, instead of a double-hill showdown Ashcraft took the final game on a silver platter for the 9-7 win.Results:1st Brandon Ashcraft2nd Russ Edwards3rd Landon Shuffett4th Wade Crane5th Claude MarrierJason Jones7th Eugene BrowningMike Laney
