9-BALL Junior Nationals – A Storm is Brewing It may have been monsoon conditions outside today in Tucson, yet there were a few whirl-wind matches going on inside. Sam Gilmer and Sylver Ochoa, both 18, faced off  with Ochoa loosing no time to take the lead. Ochoa seemed to hold a cool presence at the table and made the rounds methodically as he found himself with a 7 to 3 lead. Gilmer started to make a run and was holding 6 games just before Ochoa closed the door for an 11-6 win.In the afternoon, 14 and under, Ryan Laguardia (12) and Jose Rivas, Jr. (14) brought their skills to the table where Laguardia began the match with a 1-9 carom. Rivas came back and won the next 5 in a row to take a 5 to 1 commanding lead. Laguardia, knowing it was time for action, pushed hard to add two more notches to his score making it 5-3. The next 4 points were a blur as Rivas raced to the win of 9-3. Rivas spends a lot of time at the table practicing artistic pool and is the youngest member of the International Artistic Pool Association (IAPA). He likes the game for the challenge and stays interested because there is always something to learn. Watch for Jose in Vegas at the ESPN match, August 23-27.  The standings as of the end of today are as follows:18 and Under Open / Winners BracketJohn Morra, Tyler Strawn, Justin Bergman and Sylver Ochoa.  The loser’s bracket had 8 players left.18 and Under Girls / Winners BracketMary Rakin, Anna Kostania, Nicole Wisniewski and Juliette Houtz. The loser’s bracket had 8 players left.14 and Under Open / Winners BracketChris Futrell, Michael Mallen, Jose Rivas Jr. and Nicolas Tafoya. The loser’s bracket had 8 players left.Visit InsidePOOL for the latest news from the sport of billiards and pool.
