Banks Event Narrows at Derby City ClassicBy InsidePOOL StaffThe 9-ball banks event at the Seventh Annual Derby City Classic has narrowed from the original 407 to only 12 remaining competitors. Ending its third day and returning tomorrow are defending champion Jason Miller, Truman Hogue, Larry “The Truth” Nevel, Francisco Bustamante, Tony Coleman, Dave Matlock, Steve McAninch, Dave Hemmah, Gerald Reichly, Darrell Abernathy, Ed Ames, and John Brumback. In the last round of banks for Sunday, Miller met Chicago’s Ike Runnels on the featured table. Runnels, a competitor in last night’s banks ring game, took the first game, but Miler scored a good run in the second game in the race to three and tied up the match at 1 apiece. He came up empty on his break, but Runnels hung a ball in the corner pocket. Miller banked three and then ducked, and Runnels opted to play safe after Miller hung a long-rail 5, sinking the 5 and spotting it. Miller easily banked in the spot shot for the hill, making the score 4-1. They traded shots for a time, but Miller finally scored a wobbly 3 ball in the side for a 2-1 lead. 2005 Derby City Classic Image Gallery
Miller dropped a ball on the break and banked one in. Runnels chose to duck, and Miller had a quick three-ball run, including a super-thin long-rail bank on the 4, paused, and then banked the 8 ball straight back to win the match 3-1.Tomorrow will crown the 9-ball banks champion, while the one-pocket event kicked off today, with over 350 players.
