Barouty Bests Field at the Pete Sinkler Straight Pool Event Dan Barouty persevered through the long hours of play at The Pete Sinkler Annual Straight Pool event to arrive in first place with a 61-point difference in the final score. Kicking off on Friday, August 27, 2004, at 10 p.m., the tournament did not wrap up until nearly 9 on Sunday night at D & D Family Billiards in Downington, PA. Although the event was open to the first 16 players, only 14 of those spaces were filled. “It is a shame,” commented Sinkler. “Straight pool was lost when ‘The Color of Money’ came out.” Even with the small field, the event took the majority of the weekend. The double-elimination, play-to-150-points format stretched the days well into the night, even with the matches beginning at noon on Saturday and Sunday. The final match was a single set, with the winner being the first to reach 200 points. Barouty, who is known for his speed in straight pool, slowed his normal fast pace of play when he met Drexeline Billiards owner Bob Maidof in the final match, stretching it out to three hours. “The players are more cautious in the final match,” said Sinkler. “They don’t want to make any mistakes.” In the same event two years ago, Barouty made 139 balls in only 40 minutes. Slowing down for Barouty paid off this year, earning him the win with a final score of 200-139.
